After working with James Brown, the George Clinton/Bootsy axis and Prince's latter-day touring outfit, where else do you take your alto-funk? In 2008, Maceo Parker brought his sound to Cologne to meet the WDR Big Band for a collection of Ray Charles tunes. It went over well, so here's a sequel of soul classics (truth in titling) by Isaac Hayes, Stevie Wonder and yes, James Brown. There's not much grit in the funk of his German accomplices, but they do offer pleasingly crisp backing. Given enough room to solo, as on the rousing "I Wish," Maceo can still make you rise and shout his name.
