Although Madeleine Peyroux's lengthy career has clearly demonstrated her delicate abilities as a vocalist, her drowsy charms tend to float in that almost memorable steam above the latte machine. With Rooftop, things feel a bit more grounded, thanks in part to the help of a seasoned, well-matched veteran band (Marc Ribot is on guitar, Meshell Ndegeocello on bass). Get past the misfired read of "Martha My Dear" (Banjo? Really?) and Rooftop finds its heavy heart in tunes like "Fickle Dove," "Ophelia" and the churning loll of the title track.
