Mala in Cuba
Released: Sep 2012
Label: Brownswood Recordings
Long before dubstep became a soundtrack for Hollywood robot battles, the London DJ Mala, one of the genre's pioneers, imagined bass music as a conduit between London club culture and Caribbean musical tradition. In 2011, Mala headed to Cuba in search of samples, commissioning seasoned local players to lay down rhythms in a tempo that would lend itself to dubstep's cadence, and Mala in Cuba is the hybrid result. The lumbering grooves are all him, but they're fleshed out with supple percussion and unusual acoustic flourishes; "Como Como" and "Calle F" stray further and are better for it.
