Spain's most talented emcee has been relegated to underground status in the U.S., but Malamarismo should correct that. Mala Rodriguez has traded in her tinny minimalism (which we loved) for beats that wouldn't sound out of place on a Timbaland release. But if anybody can go commercial without sounding like it, it's La Mala. She's too wounded to give in to easy party jams, and her lyrics and desultory delivery have a magnetism that would pull the North Pole off-center. Even her collabos with artists like Tego Calderon and Julieta Venegas work. But Mala's flamenco-damaged delivery dominates.
