Indie rock might have mutated into a Top 40 commodity in the 21st century, but you'd never know it from listening to On No Evil Star. Mandate of Heaven's debut crawls through a lo-fi murk that's way more Elevator to Hell than anything you'll hear at Urban Outfitters. So yeah, breezy this record isn't. On tracks such as "You Can Leave" and "Coal Mining Town 1750," songwriter Greg Pier hides a sharp and often surreal sense of black humor behind a veil of wastoid indifference.
