Live at the Village Vanguard

Live at the Village Vanguard by Marc Ribot
Released: May 2014
Label: Pi Recordings
Times change. Or do they? While it may seem odd for an avant-skronk cat like guitarist Ribot to get booked for a residency at the Vanguard circa 2012, it turns out that Henry Grimes -- the eminence grise bassist in this band -- actually played the joint with Albert Ayler in 1966. Fittingly, along with Chad Taylor on drums, the trio attacks some late-'60s tunes: Coltrane's "Dearly Beloved" and "Sun Ship," plus Ayler's "The Wizard" and "Bells." It's tough material to cover well, but this group has the skills. And their gently abstracted standards work, too.
