After the smoldering Blues Funeral, Lanegan returns with a collection of covers that just might be the most romantic thing he's ever released. Of course, it isn't the singer's first covers affair; that would be 1999's I'll Take Care of You. But where it dug into the base of a mountain with a cast-iron spade, Imitations soars dreamily above that mountain, like a falcon. And yes, using the word "soar" to describe an offering from the gravelly voiced Lanegan is a bit odd. Yet that's exactly what he pulls off on tunes written by the likes of Neil Sedaka, Chelsea Wolfe, Nick Cave and Vern Gosdin.
