Although there's a lot of pedal steel and fiddle on this album, the songs here go far beyond the boundaries of commercial country. There aren't any in-your-face hit singles, and yet this is Carpenter's finest work to date. It deals with post-September 11 doubts, and flows like good poetry over mellow folk textures.
