Released:
Label: Firehouse 12 Records
The guitarist's well-established quintet group expands to a septet for this release, with the addition of Jacob Garchik on trombone and Ingrid Laubrock on tenor sax. Halvorson's talent for arrangement is clear on the opening moments of the title track; other highlights include the riffing theme of "Smiles of Great Men" and the swinging feel of "Butterfly Orbit." It's easy to get excited by the skronk and noise, but several soloists here -- Garchik perhaps first among them --shine in soulful ways, too, making this album the kind that should appeal to a wide variety of modern jazz fans.
