Bareback Rider
Mason Proffit
Released:
Apr 2009
Label:
Rhino/Warner Bros.
Mason Proffit's final album, originally released in 1973, finds these Midwest country-rockers busting banjo-led ballads ("Dance Hall Girl") and barroom piano jammers (a smoking version of "Setting the Woods on Fire") rather than the epic political statements of earlier records. There's still a couple of topical anthems, including "Black September/Belfast," but the bulk of Barebacker Rider unfolds like a mythical desperado's travel diary. The Eagles were definitely taking notes.
