Massive Attack's Blue Lines marked the birth of a new kind of cool. Drawing from Bristol's sound-system culture, the group's Mushroom, Daddy G and 3D brought together elements of dub, '60s soul, hip-hop and acid house to create the languid, moody sound that would come to be known as trip-hop. Tricky got his start here, as a rapper and co-writer; Shara Nelson emerged as a strong new voice in U.K. R&B, and cameos from Horace Andy introduced the reggae great to a new generation. Portishead, Mo Wax, the whole "blunted beatz" craze -- it all begins here.
