Though Pine/Cross Dover is Masters of Reality's first studio album in five years, it's the band's best in over a decade. The set encompasses everything main man (and in-demand producer) Chris Goss excels at, from fuzzy stoner-rock to arty psychedelia. But what really makes this record something special is the handful of tracks (among them "The Whore of New Orleans," "Johnny's Dream" and the sublime "Absinthe Jim and Me") that recall the spooky prog-weirdness that basically disappeared from the band's aesthetic after Masters of Reality and Sunrise on the Sufferbus.
