Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile

Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile by Matana Roberts
Released: Sep 2013
Label: Constellation
The second part of an oral-history-meets-music project brings us up to the mid-20th century, and the life of Roberts' grandmother. Gone are the post-rock textures (and strings) of Chapter 1; here instead we have a jazz quintet-plus-operatic tenor (in a flick at Roberts' childhood music habits). The singer-saxophonist narrates on "Amma Jerusalem School" and "Was the Sacred Day" (which also quotes Fannie Lou Hamer). Blues and hymns show up on "Woman Red Racked" and "Benediction," rooting the experimental sounds in other traditions. This masterful suite should be listened to in a single sitting.
