Light is, in some ways, as confused an album as you'd expect from a reggae-inspired Hasidic Jew who's become a leading light of the jam-band movement. There's no consistent message, besides a vague aspiration of uplift tempered by unconvincing rants against Babylon. Stylistically, Matisyahu's evolved a kind of rock/pop/roots-reggae/hip-hop hybrid that evokes nothing and everything simultaneously. ("So Hi So Lo" could have escaped from a Weezer album.) Yet for all that, perhaps because of all that, it's a strangely congenial, catchy and confident album, worth the two-year wait.
