Matt Costa is hardly alone in learning to play music through studying The Beatles. On his third effort, he branches out into sun-stroked L.A. '60s wonders like The Beach Boys, The Byrds and Emitt Rhodes before skipping back to England to name-check The Zombies on "Drive." Costa is more than a good student; his own kaleidoscope-glassed guitar pop comes laced with shadowy edges, and his tunes have more depth than he's sometimes given credit for. "Painted Face," "The Season" and other numbers come off as indie pop for the unironic.
