Drummer Matt Wilson is associated with a number of serious-minded jazz leaders, including Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz and Fred Hersch. But Wilson's own recordings as a leader -- including this snazzy holiday platter -- are often more fun, if no less artistically viable. Wilson takes the more daring, piano-less drums/bass/sax trio format. The band does a witty, melodically faithful version of "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch" that should have kids wondering why they don't listen to more jazz. On the other end of the spectrum, "Snowfall," the swing-era swooner, gets a Coltrane-style makeover.
