by Matthew Dear
Released: May 2007
Label: Ghostly International
Stepping away from his dance-centric sound as Audion, Matthew Dear returns to his original electronic vocal pop with an exacting authority and a heartfelt lyrical demeanor that is all his. "Deserter" is soft yet poignant: Lofted by a sweet, deep bass roll, a broken beat and sharp, percussive elements, the melody and the vocals take flight, floating on a thick bed of vocal atmospherics and warm fuzz. Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, brings us the remixes, pulling out more layers of atmospherics accompanied by a soft piano melody reminiscent of Orbital's "Halcyon On On."
