When Shipp goes electric, or plays with J Spaceman, he does so without resorting to avant-clichés. Same goes for his solo piano work. Piano Sutras is one of Shipp's most beguiling such sets yet. There's a wide variety of sound on offer: modal items like "Blue to a Point" are offset by splintery cuts like "Cosmic Dust." But the extreme diversities of language are united on a track like "Uncreated Light," which blends cluster-chord banging with the blues. And Shipp pays homage to Trane ("Giant Steps") and Shorter ("Nefertiti"), like an experimenter should.
