"Late nights with the power pop/ Drowning pain that'll never stop." Modern Art will both soothe and jolt longtime Matthew Sweet fans. He still channels the various Bs (Beatles, Big Star, Byrds), but this is a trippier trip than usual: "Nothing's standing in the way when we get high," he coos dreamily, and that's not even the song called "My Ass Is Grass." No longer chasing alt-rock hits, he's free to indulge both sonically (this was mastered in "triple analog") and lyrically: "I keep my four eyes on the road, man/ I'm gettin' old, man." The title track is the sweetest, and Sweet-est.
