Live: Hope At The Hideout

Oct 2008

Biography

The Staple Singers just wouldn't be the same without old Mavis. Lead singer and probably the most underrated Diva of the 20th century, Mavis Staples first recorded solo for Volt in 1969. She even tried her hand at Disco in 1979 and trendy, electronic pop in 1984, but at the end of the day, Mavis Staples is a soul sister. Her voice is a unique one in that her range rests perfectly between tenor and mezzo-soprano. Another talent that lies within her satiating contralto is her almost super human ability to phrase with finesse and to implant the pure power of passion and emotion through manipulating her vocal tone. This proves to be especially compatible with The Staple Singers' uncommon blend of Country Soul.
