Label: I/AM/ME
Maya Jane Coles' DJ sets fuse powerful club grooves with a darkly melodic sensibility. On her debut album as a producer, those instincts lead her toward a rich, suggestive strain of electronic pop that's influenced both by '80s new wave and '90s house. Guest vocals come from Kim Ann Foxman, Tricky, Karin Park and others, a mix of voices that, while all similarly dusky, lends variety to Coles' set of moody, mid-tempo after-party cuts. But Coles herself sings some of the most inviting songs on the album, like "Dreamer" and "Easier to Hide." Perhaps next time, she'll step out of the shadows.
