When Mayer Hawthorne debuted in 2008 with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out," listeners were amazed by how it resembled a lost soul artifact from the late '60s. But his talent for old-school recording techniques overshadows A Strange Arrangement. It contains some great songs, from the Philly soul ballad "A Strange Arrangement" to the Motown beat of "One Track Mind," and while he has a thin voice, he uses it expressively to conjure real feelings and emotions. Retro soul is a double-edged sword, but if that's what it takes to notice the legitimately talented Mayer Hawthorne, then so be it.
