The Portland once-trio, now duo's fifth release runs in myriad different directions, like the lines of a comprehensive genealogical chart. And family certainly plays a central role in Moms: "Heavy are the branches hanging from my f*cked-up family tree," sings Justin Harris in a morose monotone on "Heavy Is as Heavy Does," which flows from ominous ballad to warped '70s jam. So, yes, Moms gets dark and twisted, but it's also fun and adventurous, from the jaw-grinding guitar that opens "Capsule" to the organ peppering "Baton" to the jazzy bass on "Skintercourse" to the sparks of sax throughout.
