Mercury Rev play around with sounds like hippie kids gone loose in an electronics lab. Fortunately, they have the skills to pull it off. Snowflake Midnight gives Mother Nature a home in outer space, juxtaposing celestial hums with pastoral chirps, distorted keyboards with falling rain and cavernous echoes with cymbal crashes. The band patiently blends expansive minimalism, ambient synths, Krautrock textures and rickety feedback. It all comes together with innocent touches provided by Jonathan Donahue's kiddie coos and serene sentiments like "there's no bliss like home."
