"I'm just as f**ked up as they say," purrs Emily Haines at the start of Synthetica. It's a bold statement to introduce the band's lofty fifth album, which tackles artificiality in the age of technology. The topic may not be totally original, but in the Canadians' hands, it works well -- their new wave tendencies are primed for such retrofuturistic musings. Tracks like "Youth Without Youth" and "Speed the Collapse" even recall doom-obsessed Muse with their big stadium beats, grinding synths and undercurrents of woozy drones. Yet Metric complement that darkness with playful hooks throughout.
