Michael Hurley

Beautifully whimsical songs from this singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is a founding member of the beloved New York weirdo/folk group the Holy Modal Rounders. Hurley has a plaintive, unadorned voice with a touch of the morose in it, which gives songs with the goofiest lyrics an undercurrent of smiling sadness. The music is lush, warm-toned Folk-Rock with nice touches of banjo, pedal steel and Hurley's own casually spot-on fiddle playing. The songs unfold in a wonderfully off-kilter, unhurried fashion.
