Adding this to his two Motown collections, McDonald has spent his late career covering boomer chestnuts, here culling a broader swath of tunes, from the '87 Aretha Franklin/George Michaels duet "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" to Teddy Pendergrass' silken "Love T.K.O." But the result depends on McDonald's delivery and the arrangement -- when he tries Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," the result is fairly comic. When he goes back to Motown and soul turf, like the pair of Stevie Wonder jams, he sounds fully at home.
