Blue Moods (OJC)
Miles Davis
Released:
Aug 2006
Label:
Prestige
Miles Davis recorded this 1955 ballad set as a favor to Charles Mingus, who was trying to get a record label off the ground. While the album didn't light a fire at the time (and was probably hard to find), it stands up as an atmospheric snapshot of beatnik-era cool jazz. Davis is hard to beat when he's playing in a darkly romantic, introspective style, and Mingus is a fine supportive player, as is vibraphonist Teddy Charles.
