"Blackberry Molasses" may be the most melancholic R&B song of the '90s. It's fatalistic and though it urges listeners to "push on," it's honest about the inevitability of struggle and dissolution, slumping toward the conclusion that "Life goes on/ There's no such place as paradise." It's the perfect song to play over and over again on a rainy day. That song, as well as most of this self-titled debut, is produced by Organzied Noise, the beatsmiths behind many of Outkast, Goodie Mob and TLC's greatest hits. Mista are in fine form here, injecting their patently smooth R&B with more bluesy notes.
