"Doom wop" is Mister Heavenly's self-proclaimed M.O. Made up of Nick Thorburn (Islands, The Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (Man Man) and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, The Shins), the band acts like Bill & Ted on a bogus journey through '50s doo-wop, '70 experimental rock, and '90s alt. It's like The Platters in flannel and Frank Zappa in a poodle skirt singing tainted love songs for a school dance. Thorburn's heartthrob croons complement Kattner's cavemen grunts, while the rhythms sway between a soulful swing ("Charlyne," "Your Girl"), a cool swagger ("Reggae Pie") and a gritty stomp (yes, "Doom Wop").
