Moderat is the unlikely pairing of two of Berlin's most forceful musical personalities: Modeselektor, unholy fusioneers of electro, techno, crunk and dubstep, and Apparat, an unrepentant melancholic whose brooding techno shows unmistakable goth and emo leanings. Although Apparat only does one third of the work, his yearning sense of texture and melody dominates; Modeselektor's irreverent approach to funk worms its way into the mix via rude bass lines and swaggering, syncopated beats. "Rusty Nails" suggests Thom Yorke gone 2-step, while "No. 22" is iron-fisted dubstep wrapped in velvety tones.
