Listen closely, because this is the future of Afro-pop. This Zimbabwean band steeps its sound in the traditions of its members' Tonga culture, as well as in the history of Southern African music. But it also looks to an increasingly multicultural Africa, incorporating elements of griot-style storytelling, highlife, hiplife and soukous, as well as soul, funk and a heaping pinch of hip-hop. Opener "Njoka" is a frenzied cyclone of influences corralled by producer Manou Gallo into a fierce, focused force to be reckoned with -- and things only get more interesting from there. A rising tide indeed.
