Monica is deep in reflection on New Life, thinking about her recent marriage to NBA star Shannon Brown and the failed affairs before him. These ballads recount couplings and breakups with deadly seriousness -- her duet with Brandy on "It All Belongs to Me" seems dour when compared to their 1998 pop hit "The Boy Is Mine." Despite Monica's good intentions, she can't deliver real introspection: Her songs are too defiant and self-satisfied, and their tempos have a sluggish pace. Still, "Daddy's Good Girl," "Man Who Has Everything" and "Until It's Gone" are among the highlights.
