Right out of the gates, pianist, singer and songwriter Mose Allison created music that existed beyond genre. His 1957 debut full-length, Back Country Suite For Piano, Bass And Drums, certainly swings like bebop, but then it also contains indelible touches of blues, folk and classical. The album is overwhelmingly instrumental; his incredibly smooth vocals grace just two songs: "One Room Country Shack" and "Blues," which is the fourth segment of the "Back Country Suite." This latter tune is more commonly referred to as "Young Man Blues," and it is one of Allison's best-loved compositions.
