Mother Love Bone's legacy stands at odds with their sound. Because the band contained future Pearl Jammers Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, they have been crowned godfathers of grunge. Mother Love Bone's debut album, however, reveals a band that sounds like a cross between Jane's Addiction and Hanoi Rocks. Apple is all about sassy funk metal ("This Is Shangrila") and glitzy modern rock ("Come Bite the Apple"). The album's best moments come when fallen leader singer Andrew Wood takes to the piano and delivers one of his sorrowful ballads. These include "Crown of Thorns" and "Man of Golden Words."
