Despite the 10-year gap between albums, little has changed for Mr. Big. The group, which reunited in early 2009, still churns out polished pop-metal that derives most of its strength from musicianship, particularly the flashy chops of guitarist Paul Gilbert and bass wizard Billy Sheehan. Their fingers turn into a blur of activity on "American Beauty" and "Still Ain't Enough For Me." Sadly, though, What If... is too heavy on the power ballads. Before entering the studio, Mr. Big should've listened to Infestation, Ratt's 2010 reunion album, to get a few pointers about bringing the rock.
