With most Jamaican music leaning heavily on overproduced pop instrumentation, Europe has emerged as a new hub for reggae. With Forward Ever, Scottish sound system Mungo’s Hi-Fi revives the classic age of ’80s digital dancehall with bass-heavy rhythms and Europe’s brightest reggae deejays. Mimicking an era of that saw the emergence of legends like Yellowman and Barrington Levy, the record does a remarkable job of recreating this vintage sound with help from a talented new crop of reggae vocalists: Mr. Williamz shines brightest with his tracks “Musically Mad” and “Computer Age,” but other highlights include Pupajim’s “Boat People” and Soom T’s “Soundboy Police.”
