Murs is stylistically boring -- he clogs up his lines with too many syllables, and the tone of his voice rarely modulates beyond its snappy, terse urgency. But aesthetics and velocity have never been the point -- Murs is more of a poet than a rapper, and Murs for President is strongest when it diverges from familiar tropes. "Science" gives a social history of the hip-hop generation and makes a case for the emcee as rap's Howard Zinn, while "Everything" is more personal, chronicling a history of lunchroom beat downs and social anxiety. Still, most of his songs are too knotty to be easily untangled, and that's the point.
