Life of Pi
Released: Nov 2012
Label: Sony Classical
Canadian film composer Mychael Danna knows his way around a nuanced, evocative score; three collaborations in, he particularly knows just how to score an Ang Lee film. His Life of Pi is intimate and subtle, contemplative and moving, the perfect sonic universe for Pi's so-small-yet-so-large world on his precarious raft. Along with the usual orchestral textures, Danna weaves in meditative South Asian vocals, light Indian pop and devotional music, and European cabaret stylings that evoke a walk in a delightfully whimsical park (or, you know, zoo). It is a lovely, fitting dream world.
