Can the Dolls exist without the great Johnny Thunders? Dancing Backward in High Heels, their fifth album since helping invent punk in the '70s, argues yes. Featuring David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain, Blondie guitarist Frank Infante and some pick-up musicians, the record contains a mishmash of retro novelties and oldies fodder. Imagine if Iggy Pop and Frankie Valli teamed up, and you get the picture. Though nothing here is too rocking, the cuts "I'm So Fabulous" and "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman" possess a creepy glamour that's not far removed from What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?.
