Part of Alan Gilbert's mission in New York has been to show that Schoenberg can sit on a program with Bach and Mozart. (This is uncontroversial in European halls, but America can be a bit provincial, still.) This concert appears to have taken pains to be revolutionary in a quiet way: The Schoenberg Piano Concerto is almost too convivial at times (though points go to soloist Emanuel Ax for making it sound even close to easy). Still, the piece plays just fine next to Bach's Keyboard Concerto in D Minor and Mozart's "Linz" symphony. If you're scared of Schoenberg, let this be your guide.
