Nielsen: Symphonies 2 & 3
Released: Sep 2012
Label: Dacapo SACD
Conductor and music director Alan Gilbert has made some splashy choices in repertoire since taking over this orchestra in 2009. But in addition to dragging the players (and their funders) into the late 20th and early 21st centuries, he's also championed Carl Nielsen, who flourished in early 20th century Denmark. His symphonies can seem Brahms-y, at times, right before they take progressive tonal turns or pack on weird new textures. Start with the opening movement of the 3rd symphony, which kicks off the record -- and be glad for Gilbert's advocacy.
