Leaving more self-consciously retro stylings to divas with something to prove, Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators turn out an album of effortlessly classic soul and R'n'B on Keep Reachin' Up. The Brooklyn-born singer, who lives in Finland with her husband, Jimi Tenor, evokes the tight combos and warm tape of the '60s and '70s. A neat trick, and even neater when pulled off with the panache of Willis and her crew. It's not what year you're from, it's what year you're at, and you could do worse than to set your calendar to theirs.
