Nowadays, a band like Night Horse is tagged "retro" or "stoner rock," but back in 1973 the L.A. quintet would've been "hard rock," plain and simple. There's a very punch-the-clock feel to Perdition Hymns. This doesn't mean the album is generic; it's just tight, studied and straightforward. No frills, basically. Night Horse isn't unlike the Black Crowes, only they're a bit heavier, more into the mechanical pulse of Aerosmith than the white-soul swagger of the Allmans. These guys are probably post-indie hipsters, but they should try to set up a tour with Tesla ASAP.
