by Nina Simone
Released: Apr 2008
Label: Artwork Media
This previously unreleased collection of protest songs and interviews gives a strong draw of biographical context for Simone's personal and political songwriting. Like her other live recordings, it's funny, pained and beautiful -- but while she says in one interview that an artist's duty "is to reflect the times," the recording's contemporary resonance speaks to her enduring legacy. Her embellished yet restrained performance of "Four Women" is chilling, even with an occasional blunder.
