Considering the catchy beats, oddball humor and variety of vocals and melodies, you could be forgiven for thinking that Noze is actually French for Hot Chip, with jazzy house music in place of electro and disco. Album No. 2 from Nicolas "DJ Freak" Sfintescu and Ezechiel Pailhes is a wonderfully goofy collection, a marriage of modern-club tendencies with a century's worth of song forms. A musical smorgasbord (chanson, the Charleston, oompah-pah, Tom Waits' avant-folk, among others) informs these grooves, while serving as a distraction and a bookend. As such, it's much more than dance music.
