Toward the end of the first verse of "Cry Now," Obie makes a bold and revelatory statement: "The white boy stepped down, so I will accept the crown." He's talking about close friend and fellow Detroit rapper Eminem, whose retirement had been rumored but not confirmed when this single dropped. The song's second verse, which deals with Obie's then-recent shooting, makes a good case for the rapper being the successor to "the white boy": "We cock twos and shoot our own color/ This ain't Detroit Red/ You want X me out, Malcolm / My exodus will never be from a violent outcome."
