Electric Hawaii couldn't be a more accurate title for this New Zealand trio's debut: It's like surf music struck by lightning, then sent down a thick tube of lava. Led by Kody Nielson -- whose brother is Ruban of Unknown Mortal Orchestra -- the Kiwis keep the beats bouncy and the melodies woozy and free-flowing, swirling together the harmonious exuberance of The Beach Boys via Animal Collective ("Girl") and the psych-pop hypnotism of The Zombies and the later Beatles (see: "Blue Meanies"). The lo-fi buzz of tracks like "Cola Elixir" and "Why Why" even makes it sound authentically vintage.
