Or, The Whale's debut, Light Poles and Pines, captured a young band bursting with moxie and a love for bubbly roots-pop full of tight harmonies and furiously rattled tambourines. Their sophomore album, however, is loaded with moody ballads and brooding rockers. The band has improved by leaps and bounds. There's some really good rock to be found here. "Black Rabbit" actually sounds kind of foreboding, while on "Count the Stars" vocalist Lindsay Garfield sounds as stoic as Joan Baez.
