There could hardly be a better title for Ornette Coleman's 1959 Atlantic debut; Coleman was navigating uncharted waters by playing without a piano (or any chord-playing instruments) and shocking the jazz world with his shrieking solos, often played with coronet player Don Cherry. Coleman's vision helped create the first major document of the avant-garde jazz movement, alongside bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins. Just dig into the bold opener, "Lonely Woman," and you'll hear the wailing revolution: adventurous, hard swinging and far out without sacrificing the melodic center.
